And She's Out

Just got an update, my mother made it through surgery. The update is as follows:

Just talked with Dr. XXXXX and the surgery went very well. He got done exactly what he wanted to. There was minimal blood loss, so a transfusion was not required. There were no unexpected complications.

She'll be in recovery in about half an hour. I'll go back to see her then. When she leaves recovery in about two hours, we'll get a room number.

Obviously, I am very pleased with this news. Now comes the hard part: Making sure nobody fucks up enough to kill her while she recovers in the hospital! To do that, a family member will be with her throughout the day, every day, and a private nurse will be in the room throughout the night, every night.

#1 killer of surgical patients is medication errors
#2 killer of surgical patients is post-op infections

So, to combat that:

Only one person at a time is allowed in the rooms, and we are allowing no visitors outside of immediate family.

Also, we're at a hospital where the patients wear bar-coded wristbands, and to dispense medications, the nurses have to scan the patient's code, then the medication's code, and the computer has to agree that the medication is allowed.

So, I think we're off to a good start. :)
