Some Good News For A Change

A couple of months ago, we found out that my mother has rectal cancer. Since this form of cancer is slow-growing, they decided to take their time and pick a doctor that came highly recommended. That done, she was started on a 6 week programs of slow, continual chemotherapy, and targeted radiation therapy four days a week.

Since then, she's been on a 6 week resting period, getting ready for her surgery (which is Tuesday). Wednesday, she went in for a CT scan of the region, so the doctors could get an idea of what the therapy had done to the cancer. The good news is, there were no lumps large enough to show on the scan, which means the chemo and radiation worked exactly as they planned.

What's even better is, after they do surgery on Tuesday, they'll run the excised tissue through pathology and, based on the results, they'll determine the next course of action, which originally was supposed to be another, heavier, round of chemotherapy. They're saying now, though, that she has a 50/50 chance of not needed any more treatment after the surgery.

It's good to get good news.
