Too Much Light

Ok, so anyone who's from, or lives near, Chicago, this is for you.

There's a theatre group there that calls themselves The Neo-Futurists. We have a few of them down here in Louisville doing a show at Actors Theatre, and it's really good. I call it "scripted improv", and you might see why.

When you enter the theatre, you are handed a "menu", a date-specific list of 30 play titles, each with a number. There are also some random facts about the group, which change from day to day, and some nifty quotes. At the start of the show, one of the group explains how things will work. They will run a timer onstage, and their goal is to perform all 30 plays in 60 minutes. Which play they perform at which time will be determined by the audience shouting out numbers. Sounds bizarre, right?

The plays are short, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, whatever. They're all based, in some way, around the life or lives of one or more of the company members. And most of them are funny as hell.

At the end of the show, they roll a six-sided di, and whatever number comes up, that's the number of plays they have to remove from the list and replace with new plays.

The performance is funny, touching, and thought-provoking. These people are very clever and witty, and it's a joy to watch them in action. Their home base is in Chicago, so I hope any of my readers in the area will check them out.
